With a view to completion of its tender in e-navigation, SIRM decided to support the provision of ECDIS equipment, electronic cartography and solutions for their management. A school of education (ECDIS Academy) capable of ensuring the training of officers of the shipping companies on a new technology in support of navigation.
The SIRM ECDIS Academy is authorized by the Comando Generale delle Capitanerie di Porto (Italian Coast Guard) to the conduct of courses for Deck Officers. These courses were held under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, STCW'78, as amended, Section A-II / 1 of the STCW Code related, the IMO model course n. 1.27 and under the terms set out in DD 1321/2011 - Article 2.
The school is equipped with a cutting-edge technological equipment, which simulates navigation in different scenarios and with all weather conditions, enabling the officer to use as best as possible electronic chart, checking every instant position, speed and course, both with respect to the land and the sea, also having immediate feedback on the radar.
ECDIS training courses are for all mariners in possession of the appropriate certificate referred to in regulation II/1 of the IMO STCW 78/95 Convention, Executive Decree 5 December 2011 – ECDIS, also coming from foreign countries and navigation officers.
ECDIS training courses are divided into:
- ECDIS Generic course (Operating Level)
- ECDIS Type Specific Course for ECDIS on the main market (JRC, Danelec, Sperry Marine, Raytheon, ChartWorld, Sam Electronics, Consilium e Martek)
