The embark with Inmarsat terminals that support the function Distress are able to send an alarm by simply pressing the dedicated SOS button. The alarm is handled with high priority from Inmarsat ground stations and were sent to the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC).
In addition the ships also have the ability to send priority distress messages through the Inmarsat C.
